I was out for coffee the other day with a former mayor and a journalist. The issue of Waterloo Region’s garbage came up and I was surprised at their arguments. Upon reflection, I shouldn’t have been surprised but I was as it was all high level stuff. They missed the mark, in my opinion. The garbage issue begins at home.
Whereas I’m a salesman, they are connected, big picture players and policy wonks. For me it’s wiifm, For them it is 20 year plans, environmental studies and committee meetings.
The garbage issue as I see it
Wiifm is a sales thing. It is pronounced wifem and it stands for what’s in it for me. I know because I’m a salesperson that people are primarily concerned about how things affect them. If we can make garbage important to the people who put it out on garbage day, then we will solve the issue.
